my first love was my high school crew captain

I liked Steven way before he liked me. We were on the crew team together in high school. Steven was the crew captain. Steven was a senior, I was a junior. My poor friend, Bobby, had to listen to me talk about Steven all of the time. Bobby, at the time, was co-captain of the crew team, and one of Steve’s good friends. I would ask Bobby all the time: “Does he like me? Has he said anything about me?” Oh…poor, poor Bobby.

Somehow, I’m not really sure how, Steve decided to ask me to homecoming. He called me up one night and asked me if I wanted to go. I said yes, of course!

So, we went to homecoming together and our first dance was to “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks. So romantic, I know.

A few days after homecoming, Steve sent me an Instant Message saying something along the lines of “I need to talk to you tomorrow before crew practice.” I told him that was fine.

So the next day rolled around and a nervous Steven said, “So, ummm… uhhh…. you… I… uhhh… ummm… you want to have a relationship?” Oh yes, he is going to kill me for writing that part.

So I hugged him and squealed and said yes.

We started dating and then, 8 months in, it was time for Steven to start at Florida State University. We decided to try to make the long distance thing work. He came home about every 2 weeks, and in the meantime I applied and was accepted to FSU too.

We spent two years at FSU together. Steven was ahead of me in classes because he had started a year earlier, but I decided to double up on classes and finished up my degree in 2 years. Unfortunately, Steven decided to change his major, so I kind of overshot him by 6 months. I ended up graduating in December of 2007 and moved back to Tampa.

We did the long distance thing again. This time Steven came home every weekend.

It all worked out in the end. We live together now in Orlando. We’re happily married with our two dogs, Maple and Sadie. We’re enjoying our lives together as newlyweds.
