My first love was the song “She Drives Me Crazy,” by the Fine Young Cannibals. I think I was six years old, and sporting a really cool mullet, when I first heard it. It came out in 1989, so I don’t know if it was even a major song four years later, but I must have heard it somewhere. I spent a good year, that’s like 5 percent of my life, singing it wherever I was.
And yet, somehow, my parents didn’t know I was gay when I came out 11 years later.
